Operation Compassion Network Responds to Virginia Tornadoes
During the late afternoon of April 28, 2008, three tornadoes touched down in the southeast coastal area of Virginia. Within a matter of minutes, more than 200 people were injured, 60 critically and many others seriously injured. Approximately 125 homes were destroyed or deemed inhabitable and 10 other buildings were destroyed. So far, no fatalities have been attributed to the actual tornadoes, although two deaths were initially reported.
During the height of the storm, Pastor and Mrs. Hughes of Suffolk Church of God were making their way home from Newport News, Va. Normally this journey is a relatively short one but yesterday it took three hours to get home. Upon arriving home, they began fielding calls and helping those caught in the destructive path of the storms.
As Operation Compassion began to mobilize its network of partners, Virginia Administrative Bishop Michael Baker and Churches of God in Virginia have opened all the stops to help and assist churches and members affected by the storms.
Frank Allen, our partner from Virginia Beach, is coordinating a group of 25 volunteers helping move debris and assisting in the clean-up. God’s Pit Crew will be bringing in its heavy equipment and equipment trailer to cut downed trees and tree limbs blocking roadways, driveways and laying on houses.
In addition, other disaster network partners will be lending support through product donation and providing many different services as needed. There services to the affected communities will be of tremendous support.
Within the coming days, volunteers and product will be moving into the region to help the survivors begin to piece their lives back together. Operation Compassion and its disaster network will be there to continue its mission of helping those caught in catastrophic circumstances. You can help us continue this mission by sending a financial donation today!
