Five Ways to Make it to the Other Side of Grief

Author of “Mercy Triumphs Over Judgment,” Gerri Edwards, has identified five integral steps to not only making it to the other side of great loss and grief but to come out praising God. As a serial survivor, she has overcome seemingly insurmountable odds and emerged as a vibrant voice in Christian culture.

1) Own Your Loss
The loss of someone you love is a pain that runs deep within your soul. It is okay to feel the grief. I was angry. I was mad. The scars on my heart were so deep. I had to weep, and weep, and grieve over my loss, but I also had to remember that I was not alone.

2) Wrestle with God
He doesn’t mind a good wrestle. I think He rather enjoys it as it keeps you in constant contact. I was being pinned down, but I wasn’t going to allow my life to remain in this constantly desperate state. I wanted answers, but I also knew God wanted something from me. I wasn’t going to stop until I had gained clarity on the madness that was all around me!

3) Call God Out on His Word
I remember crying out to God: “You said You would not forsake me. You said You would never leave me. You said You know the plans You have for me. Plans to prosper me and not to harm me but to give me a hope and a future. You promised me, God. You promised me! You said it, so I know You will do it.” I reminded Him of His word, because in all the uncertainty, I knew that it would not return unto Him void.

4) Shift Pain to Purpose
When you can shift your pain into something purposeful, God will show up and deliver you. You can have peace to carry on in this life, but you cannot do it alone. My brokenness is a reminder of the pain that I endured, because through it, I came out on the other side praising God.

5) Choose to Live (Really Live)
I make a choice every day, and every day I choose life. I choose to forgive. I choose to love. I choose to get up and make the best of my day and my life. I choose to carry out the purpose God has given me, every day, until He calls me home.
