125th Anniversary Tour of Historic Sites Planned

On Friday, August 19, 2011, a tour of several historic sites of the beginning days of the Church of God is planned in commemoration of the 125th anniversary of the Church of God. What is today the Church of God was organized at the Barney Creek Meeting House on August 19, 1886.

“This will be an unforgettable heritage and prayer tour that will retrace the steps that launched the Church of God into 181 nations, with 35,000 congregations around the world,” stated Doug Small, liaison for prayer ministries of the Church of God and coordinator of the event. “Participants will hear from church historians first-hand. You will stand where history was made and you will be a part of looking backward, and to gaze forward, as we pray into the next century and how God might use the organization we call the Church of God.”

Special rates are available at the Holiday Inn Express in Murphy, North Carolina for $79.99 per night. Mention of the Church of God event is advised when making reservations. The property is located at 130 Holiday Drive and the phone number is 828-837-1111.

According to Small, the schedule for the day will include a 9: 00 a.m. start at the Barney Creek site, located on the Tennessee border about 45 miles from Murphy, north on Highway TN 68 out of Ducktown; or NC 294/TN 123, to TN 68 North. Barney Creek is just north of the Ironsburg Methodist Church, and about 12 miles south of Telico Plains, Tennessee.

At 10:30 a.m. participants will meet at the Shearer Schoolhouse and Log-Meeting House sites, off of NC 294. At noon the event will move to the First Assembly House. Just off NC 294, near Fields of the Wood. At 2:00 p.m. the group will reconvene at the home place of W. F. Bryant.

Church of God Historian Dr. David Roebuck will be on hand for questions, and to host a special exhibit at the Assembly House where a complimentary light lunch will be offered, followed by a time of music and prayer.
