Operation Compassion Responds to Tornado Outbreak
On the afternoon of April 14, tornadoes started popping up in Oklahoma from a storm system that was heading to the deep south. By Saturday, the storm had reserved its worse destruction for North Carolina and Virginia where hundreds of homes had been destroyed or severely damaged. Fatalities were reported across the region and untold numbers have been injured.
Operation Compassion, an independent benevolent agency with ties to the Church of God, and their disaster relief partners, began immediate assessment and started moving equipment, supplies and volunteers in place. Working long hours throughout the day, volunteers began cutting away tree limbs and trees that were downed by the storm. God’s Pit Crew was instrumental in establishing a disaster relief site in the Pulaski/Draper Valley area of southern Virginia. Also, Mercy Chefs brought in a mobile kitchen and served 3,000 hot meals. Mercy Chefs has sent its second mobile kitchen to North Carolina to assist there as well.
Operation Compassion has sent two shower trailers, a 53’ refrigerated trailer and a 53’ dry van trailer to hold the food necessary for serving hot meals as well as multiple semi-trucks loaded with MRE’s, bottled water, other beverages and assorted foods necessary to help this ongoing effort.
