Church of God Members Safe in Japan

Following a March 11 earthquake and subsequent tsunami which hit Japan, assessments are continuing to be made on damage and relief efforts.

According to Marc Morris, regional superintendent for the Church of God in AustralAsia, additional reports of intense aftershocks and volcanic eruptions keep coming following the tragic 9.0 magnitude quake.

“It is obvious that Japan faces more difficulties over the near and long term, including potential nuclear meltdowns,” Morris stated. “The Church of God, however, has much to be grateful for in knowing that our churches, ministers and members were spared from destruction and death from these major calamities. Overseer Eriya Yatsuzuka has conveyed deep appreciation for the concern and prayers that have been directed toward Japan.” Yatsuzuka further expressed the Church of God Japan’s commitment to minister. “We will pray, give, and go if there anything we can do for them. We do want to encourage the churches and the pastors there, so that they may stand up and share the love of God for those who lost their love ones and their houses.”

At the present time, Church of God World Missions and Operation Compassion are evaluating strategic options available to provide assistance. “Continued prayers and donations will help make it possible to provide needed ministry for the precious people of Japan,” Morris said.

Ken Anderson, World Missions field representative for Asia/Pacific, reiterated that it appears, “all of our churches are safe and none of our members have been directly affected.”

The Church of God in Japan will be assisting with the benevolence efforts as the country begins the process of feeding, clothing and housing those in need. A project number has been assigned for disaster relief in Japan: 765-0046. As it becomes available, additional information will be posted on Faith News, as well as the Church of God World Missions Web site, www.cogwm.org.
