Delmarva-D.C. Releases Regional History Book
The Church of God in the Delmarva-D.C. region recently published a book that chronicles 90 years of Church of God history in Maryland, Delaware, eastern Virginia and the District of Columbia.
Regional Administrative Bishop Ronald Martin made the announcement of the volume, “Our Living Legacy: Celebrating the Journey.”
Beginning with Paul H. Walker in 1919, the ministries of 31 Delmarva-DC overseers are surveyed with attention given to regional ministers who have served the general church. Two general overseers were set forth by Delmarva-DC congregations: Raymond E. Crowley and Paul L. Walker. The only three general overseers who have twice served in that capacity are all associated with the Delmarva-DC region: Wade H. Horton, Ray H. Hughes, Sr., and R. Lamar Vest.
Five additional ministers associated with the region also have served on the Executive Committee: Paul H. Walker, G.W. Lane, Woodrow C. Byrd, Robert E. Fisher and T.L. Lowery. Delmarva-DC pastors serving as overseers in other regions total 41; 15 have served as youth directors and seven as evangelism directors. Missionaries from the region total 37.
Two national youth directors were set forth by Delmarva-DC churches: W.A. “Dick” Davis and Mark S. Abbott. Three Delmarva-DC pastors have served as directors of Black Ministries: Joseph E. Jackson, Asbury R. Sellers and Jimmy Campbell. Two women associated with the region have served as directors of women’s ministries: Dorothy Jennings and Mary Ruth Stone.
The book contains more than 150 histories written by the region’s churches and missions. It also relates the Delmarva-DC Church of God to its denomination and to the broader Pentecostal movement.
Our Living Legacy was printed by Dexter Press of Cleveland, Tennessee, and coordinated by the Church of God Delmarva-DC Historical Commission: Darcy Abbott, Harold and Betty Bowman, Carlton Cannon, Betty Moore, Evelyn Myers and Timothy Shawyer. The Historical Commission was co-chaired by Phillip and Mary Morris who served as editors.
