Church of God Looks Toward 125 Years

In August 2011, the Church of God will celebrate 125 years of ministry.

It was August 19, 1886 when a small band of believers, discontent with the church in which they were involved, met to begin a movement which was to become worldwide in its reach. The group which gathered at the Barney Creek Meeting House in the mountains of western North Carolina that day could not have possibly imagined what the Lord would have in store 125 years later with nearly 7 milion members around the globe in 181 countries.

On August 19, 2011 the 125th anniversary will be observed by the Church of God. It will be a time to review the journey of the Church of God with the gospel of Jesus Christ into all the world. It will also be a time to review the history of the local church.

“The 125th anniversary will be a time to emphasize our doctrinal distinctives and to respond to outreach possibilities for the future,” stated Dr. Floyd D. Carey, chairman of the Church of God Historical Commission. “It will offer a great opportunity to look back at our history, respond to the Great Commission challenge and to rejoice in the mighty hand of God on our denomination.”

Carey went on to say that plans are underway for the anniversary with more details to come in the months and weeks ahead.
