Husband and Wife Law Enforcement Chaplaincy Team
Husbands and wives make great ministry teams and they serve in many different areas, but not too many serve together as law enforcement chaplains. Billy and Robin Rider, from Maryville, Tennessee, serve as law enforcement chaplains with the Blount County Sheriff’s Department. Billy has served the Sheriff’s Department for two years and Robin has now been with them for one year.
Both Robin and Billy completed the Community Service Chaplaincy Training seminar conducted by the Church of God Chaplains Commission and then were formally certified as chaplains by the Commission. This certification allows supervisors and administrators to know that our chaplains are trained and qualified for this ministry and that they are accountable to their denomination for their ministry as chaplains.
The Ridners are fully involved in this special ministry – individually, they go on “ride-alongs” with the officers, work with traffic units, respond to accident scenes, respond to domestic violence situations, and in short, answer to all calls directed to them. Officers are accompanied when making death notifications to families as well as in other circumstances where a chaplain is clearly needed.
“You have to be ready for just about anything,” they both say. “When the phone rings, you never know what may be awaiting you.” Billy and Robin readily agree that it is an exciting, challenging and personally rewarding ministry … and one that is needed in every community.
