Chaplain Aboard Ship Gives Aid to Georgia
By Dr. Jerry McNabb, Assistant Director, Chaplains Commission
The USS Mount Whitney arrived in Poti, Georgia recently with its cargo holds full of humanitarian supplies. Georgia, a sovereign nation which is under attack by another nation, Russia, is suffering from lack of food and supplies to keep its country functioning. It is a Democratic nation that is being threatened by its larger neighbor who wishes it to return to the servitude of their ever increasing socialistic system.
America once again has stepped up to plate with moral, political and material support for the Georgia and its freedom loving people. Also, onboard the USS Mount Whitney is Church of God Navy Chaplain Lieutenant Harry Hansen. Chaplain Hansen is temporarily serving as the Command Chaplain for the USS Mount Whitney. While actively involved with the numerous humanitarian and community relations events that are taking place in Poti, Georgia, Chaplain Hansen still finds time to preach the Gospel of Christ by conducting Sunday services, daily evening worship/devotional services and weekly Bible Studies. Frequent counseling sessions, delivering Red Cross messages and coordinating Navy Relief demands long days and even longer nights. However, you can still find Chaplain Hansen walking about the ship in his daily “ministry of presence” to the sailors and troops alike.
Chaplain Hansen and his wife Kristie are completing their first year in the United States Chaplain Corps and serve as the Command Chaplain for Souda Bay, Crete.
