The ‘Hole’ Truth about Christian Responsibility

A book urging Christians to embrace their biblical responsibility to serve the poor has been named the best Christian book of the year.

The Hole in Our Gospel chronicles World Vision president Richard Stearns’ decision to leave the corporate sector, his working environment of more than two decades, to lead the Christian humanitarian organization. He wrote the book after spending ten years at World Vision and seeing how most people outside the United States live.

“We can sometimes be pretty insulated, living in our comfortable bubbles and inside our churches, and most of us don’t have a really accurate view of the world and the amount of suffering there is in our world,” he points out. “Certainly I didn’t before I came to World Vision, but I’ve now traveled more than a million miles to 50 countries to see the world…a little more accurately through the way God sees it.”

He says scripture is clear when it comes to a Christian’s responsibility to care for the poor.

“In my book, there [are] over 200 scripture references that refer to commands and call for those of us who follow Christ to engage in the world…to lift up the downtrodden and the brokenhearted, and to care for the widow and the orphan,” Stearns explains. “So we have a responsibility, an opportunity, and even a commandment to love our neighbors as ourselves and to be salt and light in a dark world.”

All royalties from the book will go to World Vision.
