Humanitarian Sunday Set for World Relief

In the last few months the Church of God has suffered devastation in several countries. Prayer and support are still appreciated for the needy and the hurting. In an effort to continually keep these crises on the minds and hearts of believers, the Church of God will be observing Humanitarian Sunday on June 6, 2010. Please consider receiving a special offering to assist our brothers and sisters who face difficult situations. A brief update, as well as project numbers for four recent disasters are listed below. Please contact Church of God World Missions at www.cogwm.org for more information.

HAITI
Recovery efforts continue in Haiti where we have 154 churches affected by the earthquake and 104 completely destroyed. Hundreds of our people were injured or killed.

Jim and Gina Hudson are directing the recovery efforts. Hundreds of volunteer workers are assisting.

The Church of God Chaplains Commission recently conducted seminars to assist the bereaved. One local pastor lost his wife and children in the earthquake. He found his wife in the debris and took her to a temporary morgue. A week later he returned to retrieve the body for the funeral and in the chaos she was misplaced. He still has not found her. During the next year the Chaplains Commission will continue to join hands in counseling.

World Missions is partnering in Haiti with Men/Women of Action, Volunteers in Medical Missions, Operation Compassion and the Chaplains Commission.

In the spring Save Our World a listing of churches destroyed/damaged has been provided, and the funds needed to restore them. A DVD is also available.

CHILE

In Chile the aftershocks from the major earthquake continue. The earthquake was the fifth largest in history. Twenty-two church buildings were damaged; four will need to be totally reconstructed. Fifteen pastors are not receiving salaries from their churches and will need support for the next few months (about $1200 each).

FIJI

Hurricane Tomas battered Fiji leaving a trail of destruction. The church in Labasa and the pastor’s home was totally destroyed. Several other smaller churches were also destroyed.
