First ‘Great Day of Prayer’ Is Sunday, October 19
Evolving from his commissioning service speech delivered at the Church of God General Assembly, Church of God General Overseer Raymond Culpepper has called for a “Great Day of Prayer” every quarter for the next two years. Local congregations are being encouraged to set aside these days for various aspects of ministry and emphasis. The first emphasis scheduled for Sunday, October 19 will be the theme of “Gratitude.”
Leading the prayer initiative is Doug Small, director of Alive Ministries and Project Pray. Small has developed a series of Prayer Initiative resources, including a pastor’s guide on how to promote and conduct the Great Days of Prayer. A pdf pastor/leaders guide, as well as powerpoint presentation is available on the Web site www.forwardtogetherinchangingtimes.com . It is themed toward the October 19 emphasis, Gratitude, and is designed to be used as resource for the first Great Day of Prayer.
“This is a resource. Try it on. Use it all or the parts that fit you and your congregation,” stated Doug Small in addressing pastors. “Above all: PRAY! Move from teaching, into praying and offering thanksgiving. Pray corporately, individually, aloud or in small groups.” Small’s resource outlines a thesis, key ideas, a prayer plan, principles and practical tips.
As future dates of the Great Days of Prayer approach, similar resources will be offered. Following the inaugural October 19 launch, other days will follow each quarter on the first Sunday of each given month with the exception of July 2010 which will be observed the Sunday prior to the 73rd General Assembly:
