Prayer — It’s Popular Even on Facebook

In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in spirituality, nationally and globally. Yet Christianity is often ignored as people blindly seek spiritual fulfillment. But one aspect of Christian spirituality that regularly receives attention, even by those who don’t believe in Christ, is prayer. Does it work or doesn’t it? Though thoughts and opinions on this abound, throughout time there has been an undeniable pattern among humanity that reveals communion with God is a powerful reality.

“There’s just something about prayer that calls to our inner-most being,” explains James Meredith, assistant director of the Assemblies of God National Prayer Center (NPC). “Even those who have nothing positive to say about the church, religion or God, often are willing to be prayed for.”

Recently, Meredith created a fan page on Facebook for the NPC. Not sure what to expect as to its popularity, he was pleasantly surprised to see more than 1,000 people have become fans of the Prayer Center in less than two weeks.

Meredith explains that along with informing people about the opportunity for prayer on the NPC Web site, he hopes that the presence of the NPC fan page on Facebook will allow for greater feedback from a wide audience. “The more feedback we receive, the better we know how to serve people and help our churches meet the needs of individuals,” he says. “As I look at the list of fans, representing a diverse array of ages and nationalities, I am excited about the audience we have the potential of reaching.”

“Facebook gives the NPC opportunity to connect with the online culture in ways we could not otherwise accomplish,” states John Maempa, NPC director. “Hopefully, many people in that culture will realize afresh, or for the first time, that the ageless, ‘wireless’ means of communication called prayer is as relevant, real and powerful today as it was in Bible times.”
