NJ Marriage Vote a Cliffhanger
The homosexual “marriage” issue is coming down to the wire in the New Jersey Senate.
By a seven-to-six vote, a Senate committee in the New Jersey legislature decided to send a bill legalizing homosexual marriage to the full Senate for debate. Len Deo of the New Jersey Family Policy Council tells OneNewsNow the outcome is uncertain at this point — but either way, he says, the bill has a long way to go.
“There is a possibility that the bill could go either way, so we are encouraging our listeners and our constituents to reach out to their senator,” he says.
According to Deo, public pressure may be the deciding factor as groups arguing both sides of the issue have been outspoken about their stance. Considering this, he notes, the vote is expected to be a cliffhanger.
“The polling has been very, very interesting because some polls have support for gay marriage up by a couple of points [and] some polls have support for traditional marriage as a union of a man and a woman up by a few points,” Deo notes. “So there’s been some fluctuation. But as we’ve looked at the trend, the trend has definitely been in our favor.”
Deo says the reason the bill is being pushed so hard is that outgoing Democratic Governor Jon Corzine has stated he will sign it into law before incoming Republican Governor Chris Christie takes office on January 19. Christie opposes homosexual marriage.
