Faculty Chastises Abstinence Promotion
A Virginia school principal has fallen under the scrutiny and criticism of her own staff for publicizing abstinence.
More than ten faculty members e-mailed Douglas Freeman High School Superintendent Patrick Russo because of the appearance of abstinence proponent Pam Stenzel. Victoria Cobb of the Family Foundation of Virginia tells OneNewsNow that criticism also came from local affiliates of NARAL Pro-Choice and the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN).
“I did not see anywhere in the news reports that it was parents [who were] objecting,” contends Cobb. “And in fact, when you look at surveys around the country nationally done, you will see [that] parents overwhelming support abstinence as the message [they want] being taught to their children. It is only the left-wing factions of our society that really find this offensive.”
CitizenLink reports that Principal Anne L. Poates provided the option for students to opt out of the session, and that was made known to parents via e-mail. Nevertheless, there was interference at the outset.
“This speaker was told to censor her remarks, and in particular told not to speak about pregnancy resource centers because they do not offer abortions,” Cobb reports.
She is hopeful that parents in Richmond will rise to defend Russo. Cobb further notes the irony in the fact that another suburban Richmond school district recently decided to teach the Bible as an elective.
