Liberty Counsel Defends Tenn. School From ACLU ‘Bully’
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has filed suit against a Tennessee school on charges similar to those in a 2006 Florida case.
Mat Staver of Liberty Counsel says the Florida case occurred in Santa Rosa County, where the ACLU wanted to charge school officials for criminal contempt with civil penalties and jail time, simply because they blessed a meal. Now the ACLU is focusing on the Cheatham County school district in Tennessee.
“Part of what they say is the Gideons are allowed to pass out Bibles and a history teacher says that the United States is a Christian nation,” Staver reports. “The fact is, the United States Supreme Court has said that the United States is a Christian nation — not once, but several times.
The problem arose prior to the ACLU’s involvement as the parents of four Cheatham County students approached the school board with complaints concerning the school’s instructing their children about God and their beliefs. Staver says the lawsuit is part of the ACLU agenda to drive religion out of the public arena altogether — an effort he says his firm will not ignore.
“Every time the ACLU stands up to intimidate and bully these kinds of school districts, Liberty Counsel will be there to defend them,” the attorney explains. “In fact, we are already defending the Santa Rosa County case in Florida, and we’re offering to defend the county school officials in Tennessee against this ACLU bullying tactic.”
