Valuing ‘The Wonder of Life’ Inside the Classroom

A nonprofit organization is helping teachers advance the pro-life cause in the classroom.

The goal of Teachers Saving Children, Inc., is to help pro-life educators, both private and public, establish a respect for human life in the classroom and in professional educator’s organizations. Connie Bancroft, the executive director, says the organization is run by a volunteer force.

“We are open to not just teachers; we’re open to anybody involved with education. So it could be administration. It could be classified, which would be secretaries, bus drivers, or custodians,” she explains. “We are made up mostly of teachers, but we do have other people that do belong as well.”

Members receive a bi-monthly newsletter that keeps them informed on pro-life and educational news. But Bancroft says the big project is a pro-life exhibit at the National Education Association convention.

“We go in there and put an exhibit up called ‘The Wonder of Life,’ which deals with the development of human life,” she notes. “And we present materials that can actually be used in the classroom — materials mostly for science and health classes, but also for other classrooms as well.”

According to Bancroft, the display is always well-received at the convention. The organization also provides a brochure that explains teachers’ rights within their union, but Bancroft notes they do not provide any legal advice or help. Rather, they refer teachers to other organizations for those matters.

Membership runs in conjunction with the school year and has remained steady for 2008-2009.
