Open-Air Church Gains Long-Term Lease

A church meeting in a Naples, Florida park will continue to meet despite opposition.

Cambier Park has been the meeting place for Celebration Community Beach Church for several years, but faced opposition in its bid for a new five-year lease. The city council meeting generated the biggest crowd Mayor Bill Barnett has seen, hundreds of people. (See earlier story)

WBBH television talked with Harryet King, who is one of the members. “This is just an inkling of how many people care about Celebration Beach Church.”

There had been concerns as to whether permitting the church to meet on city property was constitutional on the basis of separation of church and state, but no one spoke against it. Councilwoman Penny Taylor is the only member to vote against a new pact.

“The intention was never to make the park a permanent home for celebration church,” she comments.

But many church members say they have learned to enjoy the open-air meeting place for Sunday services. This past Sunday members celebrated a new five-year contract with the city.
