With swine flu cases on the rise and hurricane season kicking off, CEN chapters are getting into action. CEN is helping churches establish chapters which will coordinate the network of volunteers. Mary Marr, founder of CEN, says the focus right now is on preparation.

“The chapters help the greater church within local communities to be able to respond together well in a unified effort,” she explains. “They also forge the ‘ready church initiative’ so churches can be ready.”

Local chapters offer the advantage of being aware of the risks in their area — like the swine flu or economic crisis, says Marr. “What the chapters actually do is…work together in order to be able to respond to the needs in local areas,” she shares.

Marr points out that Christians are in a unique position to be responsible citizens in the area of general preparedness; and are called to offer a Christ-like response in prayer, caring, and sharing the gospel in times of an emergency.
