Online Safety for Children, Peace of Mind for Parents

A survey reveals children are viewing inappropriate material online.
The survey, conducted by OnlineFamily.Norton, lists the top 100 sites visited by minors, with YouTube at the top of the list. Marian Merritt, Symantec internet safety advocate, tells OneNewsNow that although YouTube is a good site, it can pose dangers.

“There is a lot of material on YouTube that’s objectionable, and although they do work very hard at YouTube to bring down things that are adult or inappropriate, it’s a challenge for them, so parents really do need to monitor that,” she contends.

The survey also lists pornographic sites in the top 10 most viewed by children. Merritt suggests parents can monitor their children’s online activities through the family safety service her company provides.

“And if they break a family rule, you would be alerted via your e-mail at work or wherever you are or on your cell phone, and you could take appropriate action that way,” she explains.

Merritt also suggests that installing a filter system on a computer is an additional tool parents can use. At any rate, she believes children should have rules and boundaries for the use of computers.
