Dates for 73rd International General Assembly for the Church of God, scheduled to be held in Orlando, Florida, have been modified from July 26-31 to July 27-30, 2010.
Announcement of the change comes from the International Executive Committee with the approval of the Executive Council. The General Assembly Cabinet, a group that coordinates and plans the bi-ennial General Assembly, assisted the Executive Committee with logistics of the decision.
“This change is one of several which will take effect with this coming General Assembly,” stated Scot Carter, chairman of the General Assembly Cabinet and director of the General Assembly. “Anytime you can shorten the number of days a facility is needed, there is a significant savings. After much deliberation and research, the schedule will be modified to essentially eliminate two days the convention center will be needed, yet we will not have to compromise the business at hand.” Carter noted that the Executive Committee has extended the General Council business sessions to allow more time for discussion of issues.
While still more than a year away, much planning is underway for the General Assembly.
Carter stated that as part of the new abbreviated Assembly schedule, portions of services, such as the traditional Saturday morning Commissioning of leaders will become part of the Friday evening worship celebration. Other schedule and event changes will be announced as the event draws closer.
“These changes make a lot of sense for a lot of reasons,” Carter continued. “While ending the Assembly a day earlier saves thousands in rental fees, it also allows for an extra travel day for so many of our people who need to be back at their local churches. The same can be said for the front end. By starting the Assembly on Tuesday morning, it allows ministers and their families an extra day to get here. Essentially, this schedule makes it much easier for pastors to not miss a Sunday if so desired. Another side benefit is that Orlando is a very family-friendly city. If some want to extend their time in the area to accommodate a family vacation, this schedule helps facilitate this option. “
The 2010 General Assembly will be held in Orlando, Florida at the Orange County Convention Center. Several hotels are located within close proximity, saving on the cost of transportation and shuttle.
A dedicated Web site for the General Assembly will be launched in January and will contain all necessary information for registration, schedules, events and hotel accommodations.
