Lee University Awards 437 Diplomas
A near record number of graduates walked the stage to receive their diplomas at the Church of God’s Lee University last weekend.
It was the 146th time Lee has conducted a graduation ceremony. The May commencement weekend is the largest of three ceremonies held on the Cleveland, Tennessee campus where over 4,100 students are enrolled in both graduate and undergraduate programs.
In an arena full of happy family, friends and university faculty, 437 Lee University students received diplomas Saturday, May 9. 408 students received bachelors degrees and 29 received masters diplomas.
Dr. Nancy Moody, President of Tusculum College and a leader in nursing education in the State of Tennessee and the Southeast, delivered the keynote address. Moody discussed the cardinal virtues and urged students to have courage and remember to respect the diversity of the world they are entering.
The ceremony, held in Lee’s Paul Dana Walker Arena, began Friday evening with the Commissioning Service, where six graduating seniors reflected on their personal experiences at Lee. After the student reflections, graduates were presented with personalized Bibles that had each been inscribed by Lee President Paul Conn, a tradition he has held since the beginning of his presidency.
Festivities continued on Saturday morning with the Commencement Ceremony. Following Moody’s speech, the graduation candidates were presented by Dr. Carolyn Dirksen, vice president for academic affairs, and received their diplomas from Dr. Conn. After the conferring of degrees, Lee faculty members Shane Griffith, Dr. Mike Iosia, and Dr. Trevor Milliron were honored with the faculty excellence awards.
