Richardson Honored for Dedicated Service

Rev. Carl Richardson, former director of radio and television ministries for the Church of God, was honored during an unprecedented joint meeting between Operation Compassion and Care Ministries Boards of Directors for the purpose of honoring the longest tenured Chairman of the Board for Operation Compassion.

Carl Richardson was named chairman of Operation Compassion at the 1994 Church of God General Assembly. Chairmanships are usually limited to eight year tenures, however because of his unique ability and cutting-edge style of leadership, Richardson was allowed to extend his tenure to help shape and form the fledgling charity.

When Operation Compassion was begun in 1994, it was not much more than a dream envisioned by the late John D. Nichols who had been appointed as Director of Benevolence Ministries. Richardson’s appointment to chair the Board allowed him to use his creativity to shape and form the direction of Operation Compassion, along with Nichols. In the early years and at various stages of growth, Richardson’s imprint is clearly seen.

In 1999, when Nichols and Richardson saw a need to expand Operation Compassion from a teaching and training model to hands on model, David Lorency was called upon to lead Operation Compassion into new vistas. The trio proved to be a formidable team as Operation Compassion grew to become the 58th largest charity in the United States and the 10th largest internationally.

After fourteen years of serving as chairman, Carl Richardson’s tenure came to a close at the Church of God General Assembly in 2008. The joint Boards honored Richardson’s accomplishments over dinner at the Cleveland (Tenn.) Country Club earlier this month. David Lorency, president of Operation Compassion and incoming chairman Dr. Donnie W. Smith, presented Richardson with a Howard Miller mantel clock complete with a commemorative inscription.

Thank you, Carl Richardson, for your faithful service to Operation Compassion through your gracious contributions and commitment to excellence. Your tenure was a paramount success marked by exceptional leadership, dedication to care and a heart of compassion.
