Conservatives Push to Protect Marriage in NC

North Carolina’s legislature is considering a marriage amendment to enshrine traditional marriage in its constitution.

Proponents of banning same-sex “marriage” hope to get a bill passed this year to put the issue before voters. Matt Lytle of the North Carolina Family Policy Council tells OneNewsNow it is a tough process.

“In the past five years, the legislature has not discussed the bill,” he admits. “It’s always been sent off by the leadership into a committee where it’s died in each successive year.”

The Associated Press reports North Carolina is the only Southern state that does not define marriage as strictly between a man and a woman.

Lytle’s organization has launched a grassroots effort statewide to convince lawmakers to send the measure out of committee for a full vote and put it on the ballot. He says a survey reveals a large majority of North Carolina constituents want members to do just that.

“Seventy-six percent of North Carolinians polled supported a constitutional amendment in North Carolina defining marriage as between one man and one woman,” he points out. “Only 21 percent said that they opposed the amendment.”
