Lee University Named to President’s Service Honor Roll
Lee University was recently listed on the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with distinction by the Corporation for National and Community Service for the third consecutive year.
Since 2006, the honor roll selects colleges and universities that have outstanding community service and service-learning programs. Only 83 colleges and universities, including Lee University, were listed on the honor roll with distinction, and 547 institutions were listed on the basic honor roll.
“This recognition is a testament to the meaningful work our students and employees do with our community partners,” says Mike Hayes, assistant vice president for Student Life. “Being listed with distinction three years in a row speaks to the sustained changes we all hope to see in our community, around the world, and in our students’ lives. We look forward to continuing to share the heart of Lee University through this program in the years to come.”
Only two other universities from the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU) were listed on the honor roll with distinction, and only one of those universities was on the list for three consecutive years. Three other Tennessee schools were on the honor roll with distinction: East Tennessee State University, Lipscomb University, and Rhodes College. Lee University is one of only 26 colleges and universities listed on the honor roll with distinction for three consecutive years. On this list, Lee ranks among top universities such as Duke, Georgetown and the University of Virginia, among others. The honor roll made selections based on criteria such as innovation and effectiveness of the service-learning programs, percentage of students engaged in community service and the inclusion of service-learning within the education curriculum. The President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll is sponsored by the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation, the USA Freedom Corps, and the U.S. Departments of Education and Housing and Urban Development. The program is the highest federal recognition for outstanding community service that a university can receive and is designed to “support innovative and effective community service and service-learning programs” while encouraging students to volunteer.
