Church of God Evangel Wins Five National Awards

Last month, at the annual Evangelical Press Association Convention in Lexington, Kentucky, the Church of God Evangel magazine had its best-ever showing, winning five awards.

In the Higher Goals competition—which includes Christian periodicals of all types—the Evangel was honored in four writing categories:

Devotional. Third place: “Where Are Our Feet Taking Us?” by David White (state director, Church of God youth and discipleship, Kentucky)

Biblical Exposition. Third place: “Is My Family Cursed?” by Lance Colkmire (managing editor, Church of God Publications)

Humorous Article. Fourth place: “The Day the Church of God Did Not Go Down with the Ship” by Paul Conn (chancellor, Lee University)

First-Person Article. Fifth place: “When Jesus Takes Us by the Hand” by Shea Hughes (state administrative bishop, Church of God in Arizona)

In the 2024 Awards of Excellence, where magazines are judged in categories, Evangel won an Award of Merit. Judges in this category review the entire publication based on several criteria, including writing quality, content choices, imagery, and overall design.

The Evangel staff includes Lance Colkmire (editor), Bob Fisher (graphic designer), Esther Metaxas (copy editor) Elaine McDavid (assistant), Pauline Justice (final reviewer), and Arleah Waycaster (associate editor). David W. Ray is the general director of Church of God Publications.
