ChristiaNet Poll: Prayer in Public Schools Should Be Allowed

ChristiaNet.com, the world’s largest Christian portal with twelve million monthly page loads, in a recent poll asked the question “Should prayer be allowed in public schools?” Out of 1,545 participants, 95% responded with a resounding “Yes”. The majority of those polled feel that school prayer should be allowed, but not mandatory. Bill Cooper, President of ChristiaNet.com, states, “Daily prayer is very integral to a Christian’s walk.”

Others agree that because the United States was founded on Christian principles everyone has freedom of religion and the right to pray even in school. Many Believers take a more personal approach and say, “each day should start with prayer” and “it encourages students to be good”. One concerned voter made a seemingly ironic observation, “First the government takes prayer out of school. Then after a child breaks the law and is sitting in jail, the government gives them a Bible.”

The smallest group, totaling only two percent, voted “No”. Most of the comments from this group indicate praying should be done in private. That praying is a personal matter and should not be done in the company of non-believers. One participant said, “The Bible says we should pray in secret.” While other Christians feel exposing their kids to prayers of other religions such as Islam, Hinduism or Wicca is not worth it since praying should be taught at home by parents.

Lastly, three percent of the respondents were “Unsure” about prayer in schools. This group seems to align more closely with the “No” voters with comments such as “too many different religions/beliefs” or “depends on who is leading the prayer”. As a compromise that respects all religions and belief systems, this group suggests the use of the “moment of silence” as the prayer time for Christians to talk with God. As Christians we don’t want other beliefs forced upon us; therefore, we should respect others by not forcing Christianity upon them. The Bible teaches to spread the Gospel and the world will know we are Christians by our love for one another.

To help those in need of prayer, ChristiaNet has just created an Online Prayer Room. Using the latest Internet technology, ChristiaNet has made it simple to submit prayer requests and praise reports.
