Flood Relief Ongoing in Sri Lanka

Earlier this year, Sri Lanka experienced immense flooding and landslides from two natural disasters – a monsoon and a cyclone. At least 208 people died and almost 700,000 were affected. Church of God World Missions leaders immediately released funds to National Overseer Premadasa Ginigalgoda to help relieve the suffering.

Church of God in Sri Lanka initially had no idea the situation would become so desperate. Nelum Ginigalgoda, Premadasa’s wife, prayed and God reminded her of a cousin who was head of the Sri Lankan Army. He at once sent food – not only to the church people, but to the entire area as well. There had been no way to reach the children’s home, but the army sent a special boat. The power was off for three days. Wild animals and poisonous snakes, including cobras and pythons, were driven to populated areas. God spread His wings of protection and no child became sick or diseased.

Community wells were cleaned by Christian volunteers, and the people realized God’s love in a tangible way. The assistance turned attitudes around to the positive. At a meeting in a school, the principal and a Buddhist monk called on God and said they wanted to give thanks to Jesus Christ. That was a huge acknowledgement. The people uttered, “May you have help from Jesus. God made it possible!”

Only God can produce good out of something the enemy means for destruction. Circumstances were atrocious, but Sri Lanka beginning to mend. The investment of God’s people will bring about rich returns for His Kingdom.

Give to disaster relief for Sri Lanka through Christ’s Birthday Offering, project #020-0803.
