Beach Ministry Reaches Thousands Over Spring Break
For three weeks this month, more than 800 college students spent their Spring Break witnessing in word and deed to thousands of their peers in Panama City through Beach Reach, a ministry of LifeWay Christian Resources and the Southern Baptist Convention. Not only do the students share the gospel, they also provide free van rides and daily pancake breakfasts.
Angel Ellis, coordinator of Beach Reach, says it is a picture of the gospel in action. She notes that throughout the New Testament Gospels, Jesus was consistently with the people. She also mentions that Matthew 9 is one of her favorite scripture passages.
“When the Pharisees were trying to trap Jesus, they asked why [he ate] with ‘sinners,’ and Jesus boldly states that it is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. So it’s cool to go to where the people are because we believe that’s what Jesus modeled for us,” Ellis points out. According to Ellis, the ministry not only provides on-site evangelism opportunities but also allows coordinated follow-up meetings through working with colleges and churches nationwide.
“The neat thing is that many times [when] spring breakers are here, their local campus is [also] here attending Beach Reach, so … we can connect [with] them pretty quickly. We also try to connect them with a local church in their city as well,” Ellis says. Beach Reach volunteers come to Panama City from as far away as Utah and New York.
