Trans World Radio Missionaries Released After Carjacking

As testimony to the power of prayer, two Trans World Radio missionaries are now safe after they were kidnapped at gunpoint in South Africa.

Doug and Madeleen Schumacher were carjacked at gunpoint in Johannesburg earlier this week. They had just arrived to visit another missionary family when a carload of criminals pulled in behind them and forced them into the backseat of their own car. They were driven around for the next 20 minutes and threatened with murder. However, at the same time, a worldwide alert went to Trans World Radio (TWR) staff and supporters, asking for prayer. Shortly after the alert was posted, the driver of the Schumacher’s car told them that somebody must have been praying for them, because they were going to be released.

Ray Alary, a TWR missionary to Africa, explains there is considerable opposition to the work of missionaries in South Africa — and that incidents like the carjacking affect all ministry staff and missionaries. “Unfortunately, also many of our staff are traumatized,” he shares, “because, what happens is, we tend to all question whether we’re safe being there.”

“Many of us men travel a lot,” he continues, “and when these types of incidents happen, our wives are very afraid to be at home by themselves and even to go out of their homes. So this is not as simple as this single family — the family of TWR is affected by this.”

According to Alary, the Schumachers are undergoing counseling after their ordeal.
