SMCH Makes Appeal for God’s Pit Crew

On an annual basis, God’s Pit Crew, a nation-wide crisis response team, reaches out and blesses the Church of God Smoky Mountain Children’s Home. The organization often sends a team of women and men to renovate cottages, repair broken equipment, and enhance the campus buildings. Last year 19 women and men converged on the campus and transformed an empty facility into a place of respite.

Recently, a God’s Pit Crew semi-truck was making preparations to leave their base of operations in Danville, Va. to head toward the SMCH. This particular truck had been loaded with pallets of water, Gatorade, paper products and non-perishable food items for the children, youth and staff who live on the campus.

As the truck was winding its way around a curve near Galax, Va., the trailer swerved, toppled over, and came to a crashing halt. Thankfully the driver, Sid Algood, only had a couple of scratches on his arm and leg.

Dave Willis, of GPC, said that one of their volunteers said he felt impressed to pray for Sid. Sid had just returned from one of our country’s devastated areas and was getting ready to leave again for Sevierville, Tenn. The staff felt compelled to gather and pray specifically for Sid, not knowing that only two hours later, the tractor trailer would end up in the accident.

“We thank the Lord for sparing Sid’s life, however, the organization’s truck and trailer were both totaled,” said SMCH Director Walt Mauldin. “We usually ask people to help SMCH, but today we are asking everyone to consider blessing God’s Pit Crew! They have to replace a truck, a trailer, and all that was lost in this terrible accident.”

“I personally flew into the Gulf Coast a few days after Hurricane Katrina,” Mauldin continued. “I witnessed volunteers from God’s Pit Crew moving into action. That is the kind of work in which these women and men are consistently involved.”

Mauldin is making an appeal to assist God’s Pit Crew in this recovery. Contributions can be sent to SMCH, where 100% of donations will be passed on to GPC. God’s Pit Crew may also be contacted directly at: www.godspitcrew.org or by phone at (434) 836-4472.
“Let’s bless an organization that always blesses others!” Mauldin concluded.
