Former Presidential Candidate Pleased Fred Thompson Entering Race

A pro-family activist and former presidential candidate says he’s glad that former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson is officially throwing his hat in the ring for the GOP presidential nomination.

Thompson officially announced his candidacy today via a webcast at ImwithFred.com. News reports say the announcement will be followed by a campaign tour that will take him to several early primary states. Gary Bauer of American Values is one conservative activist who has anticipated Thompson’s entry into the race for a long time. He believes the former Law and Order star has a good chance of picking up support from pro-family conservatives.

“I think pro-family, pro-life voters are all a little frustrated that they haven’t been able to find a viable candidate who can actually win the nomination and go on and win the election. And so I think a lot of those voters will be taking a hard look at Senator Thompson,” he says.

And Bauer points out that in at least one way Thompson reminds him of Ronald Reagan. “Reagan never desired the presidency, but he did have a set of ideas he felt strongly about,” the family advocate recalls. “And he reluctantly got into the race because he felt that nobody else was really addressing those issues — and I think in some ways, the same can be said of Senator Thompson.”

Bauer says there are too many people in the United States who from the moment of birth yearn to be president and spend their entire lives pursuing it. In that light, Bauer says he has found Thompson’s somewhat reluctant attitude “refreshing.” However, he points out that Thompson will have to work hard to garner the Republican nomination and be victorious in 2008. Bauer also believes that Thompson can defeat Senator Hillary Clinton (D-New York), the presumptive Democratic nominee.
