Church Leader Goodwin C. Smith Passes Away
“Know ye not that there is a prince and a great man fallen this day in Israel?” – 2 Samuel 3:38
BERMUDA — Bishop Dr. Goodwin Campbell Smith passed away on November 20, 2007, in Bermuda.
Having served as overseer of Bermuda since 1994, Dr. Smith was also elected to the Executive Council of the Church of God in 1986. From 1982 to 1990, he served on the World Missions Board. Earlier in his ministry, he pastored in New York City for six years, then became pastor of the Heritage Hall New Testament Church of God in 1974 in Hamilton, Bermuda, and continued to pastor there until now.
A community-minded individual, Dr. Smith served as president of the Bermuda Ministerial Association, president of the Bermuda Pentecostal Fellowship, member of the Inter-City Ministers Alliance, member of the Juvenile and Domestic Court Panel, and a member of the Advisory Board on the Misuse of Drugs (an appointment by the Bermudian government). His heart was to always serve others.
Along with his many accomplishments, Dr. Smith was appointed by the governor of Bermuda to be a member of the Human Rights Board of Inquiry. He also gave valuable input as a former member of the Bermuda Liaison Committee of Churches and Social Action Committee, and was a former member of the Special Courts Panel.
In 1988, Dr. Smith had the distinct privilege of becoming a Member of the British
Empire (M.B.E.), an honor bestowed by Queen Elizabeth II herself.
Dr. Smith is survived by his wife, Lady Ruby Smith; daughter, Gayna; Gayna’s husband, Michael; and four grandchildren.
