We Saw the Smoke
CLEVELAND, Tenn. — Lee University, in partnership with World Missions, recently held its annual Lee Missions Week. The Missions Week project for this year was the Church of God children’s home Hogar Agape (House of God’s Love) in Managua, Nicaragua.
We Saw the Smoke
Richard Baker, the guest speaker for the 10:40 a.m. chapel service on Thursday, November 8, began his sermon with a story about a shipwreck. The sole survivor built a little wooden hut on a deserted island. One day, he noticed smoke coming from his hut and realized his hut had burned down. He was angry and upset at God because of this tragedy. The next day a big ship arrived to rescue him. He asked, “How did you know where to find me?” They replied, “We saw the smoke.”
Baker continued his sermon by telling the story about how he found 19 abandoned children in a village in Nicaragua and how God put a burden in his heart for them. He raised $220,000 and built an orphanage called Hogar Agape, which means “Home of God’s Love.”
Baker challenged the students at Lee to look for the smoke that is billowing up in the lives of other people who are in need and less fortunate. The smoke is a sign of a need.
“I was blessed to see how Richard Baker followed God’s leading to share his testimony of God’s life-changing power,” said Donna Lloyd, World Missions staff member.?
“I was blessed by Richard Baker’s powerful testimony and how God chose him, a broken-down nobody, to be used greatly for His purpose in helping homeless children,” said Ann Bowden.

Giving to Hogar Agape
“At this point we have sold more T-shirts than ever before;?we have approached $15,000 which is a University record; and, we are moving toward the goal of $21,000 which will be matched to produce a $42,000 gift to Hogar Agape,” said Jimmy Harper, Lee University campus pastor.
Harper continued, “We want to give Hogar Agape $42,000 so that we can keep them in operation for one year!”
