Northern Luzon School Certified Level Two

A site visit team from the Division of Education and Church of God World Missions recently traveled to the Philippines for an evaluation visit to the Church of God Theological College in Cauayan, Isabela Province, Northern Luzon.

Dr. Lynn Stone, administrative assistant in education; his wife, Dr. Mary Ruth Stone, international director of Women’s Ministries; and Dr. Bill George, World Missions coordinator of education, were hosted by the college president, Bishop Severino Reyes, and his staff.

The visit was part of an ongoing effort by the two departments to work with some 105 educational institutions outside the United States to help them meet the norms and criteria for denominational certification. The team has announced that they will recommend the school for Level Two certification and for candidacy status for Level Three.

According to Bill George, a school may qualify as Level One, a local-church sponsored program; Level Two, a Bible institute, awarding a diploma; Level Three, a Bible college, offering a degree; or Level Four, a graduate institution. Certification acknowledges that the school has met or exceeded standards relating to academic quality, curriculum matters, budgetary organization, library holdings, student life and other related areas.

The Church of God Theological College was started in 1954 and was first known an National Bible Institute. It later changed its name to Evangel College, and with its 2006 move to new facilities became known by its present name. An imposing multipurpose building containing classrooms, dormitories, library and chapel is under construction and is being completed on an ongoing basis. Team members also paid courtesy visits to two other institutions, the Asian Center for Christian Ministries in Manila, led by Dr. Scott Rains, and Lee Community College in Singapore, whose president, Dr. Frederick Toke, is overseer of the Church of God in Singapore and Malaysia.
