Community Service Chaplaincy Celebrates 20 Years

This year, 2014, Church of God Community Service Chaplaincy celebrates 20 years of continual service in volunteer ministries. Thousands of Chaplains have gone before us and, should the Lord tarry His coming, thousands more will follow us in the fields of service.

On January 28, 1986, the space shuttle, Challenger, lifted off from Cape Canaveral, Florida, and Christa McAuliffe, a volunteer on this mission, was on her way to becoming the first ordinary citizen to travel into space. Many will remember, that 73 seconds after liftoff, the Challenger exploded and the entire crew was lost. Did Christa know that the mission was dangerous? Of course she did, but she volunteered and went anyhow. Christa McAuliffe, paid a supreme cost for her volunteerism, but she reflects the mentality of many of our Church of God Community Servants and the chaplains, which serve them. Police Chaplains, Fire Chaplains, Corrections Chaplains, EMS Chaplains and many others do their “mission” voluntarily, eagerly and with passion.

None of us know what 2014 shall bring to us. We do not know what disasters may be on the horizon, and we do not know what challenges will be waiting for us in our Community Service. But, you are an army of volunteers, who stand ready to be called and even sacrifice.

Level III Training, followed by a Certificate/Diploma in Chaplaincy Studies, is going to be held in Cleveland, Tennessee, the last week of May 2014. To learn more, please contact the Chaplains Commission by emailing Diana Cardona ([email protected]) or calling 423.478.7740.
