Micah Challenge Issues Call for ‘Shine A Light’

In October, 2010, the Church of God joined the Micah Challenge 10.10.10 global campaign of prayer and action around the issue of extreme poverty. Many local congregations and thousands of members participated. Now, Church of God congregations are asked to join the “Shine A Light” campaign being organized by Micah Challenge International during the month of October.

“Corruption is not just an affliction of the Global South, but in North America it is often our policies, our companies, and perhaps even our consumer practices that encourage corruption,” said Dr. Richard E. Waldrop, and Church of God missionary and liaison to Micah Challenge International. “This is an issue we believe is close to God’s heart, and one that we as followers of Jesus can speak on with integrity. I am extending to the Church of God an invitation to join millions of Christians worldwide who are bringing light into darkness by taking a stand against corruption – greed, secret deals, bribery, and abuse of public influence – which impacts people in extreme poverty the most. Corruption is the biggest barrier to ending extreme poverty.”

According to Waldrop, in October 2014, U.S. President Obama will join with world leaders at the G20 Summit in Australia. Before this meeting takes place, the vision is for one million Christians to call on world leaders, asking them to commit to tackling corruption.

As leaders of churches, pastors are in a unique position to help bring light to such an important issue. Here is what can be done:

• Teach on the issue of corruption from a Biblical perspective during the week of October 13th – 20th – download the toolkit for sermon ideas and song lists
• Host a ‘Shine a Light’ prayer vigil at your church – download the toolkit for instructions for a special prayer activity. REGISTER your vigil to let us know you are praying!
• Share the Shine a Light: Expose Corruption video during your Church service
• Order ‘Shine A Light’ postcards to distribute and sign during your Church service

From Nigeria to Nepal, Brazil to Malaysia, Christians are a taking a stand against corruption. Will you and your Church join the movement?
