Lee University to Host Lee Day, April 5-6

Cleveland, TN–The largest single recruiting effort of the year for Lee University will be conducted on April 5 and 6, 2013.

Lee Day has been a staple of the recruitment effort of the Church of God university since the early 1960s when the late Stanley Butler conceived the idea along with then president Dr. Ray H. Hughes Sr. At the time the enrollment at the denomination’s flagship school was just under 1,000 students. Today, there are nearly 5,000 students enrolled on campus and through online programs.

Students from across the country are scheduled to arrive on campus Friday afternoon for registration and the events continue almost non-stop until the awarding of scholarships though a drawing takes place in Conn Center on Saturday night. The festivities are open to youth of all ages, but primary focus will be on high school juniors and seniors who are in the process of making decisions for college. In addition to students traveling with their parents to the campus, many church youth groups led by youth ministers who are graduates of Lee, will be making their way to the Cleveland, Tennessee campus.

Highlights of the weekend schedule include academic displays, open classrooms, residence hall tours and early class selection. Campus tours will take groups all over campus and Lee music ensembles will be performing at selected venues. There will be information gathering sessions for music, drama, Summer Honors and theatre, as well as “Major Discovery,” an event designed to give the latest on selected popular majors. There will even be a session entitled, “Meet the Coaches,” where prospective students and parents can meet coaches of their desired sports with try-outs available in some cases.

Throughout the weekend there will be several team sports on display as the baseball, softball and tennis teams will be playing opponents from visiting schools.

Free food will be readily available for registered Lee Day delegates at a number of events, including a Friday night dinner in Jones Dining Hall and a Saturday night cookout in Alumni Park. Special Saturday lunches will cater to high school sophomores, juniors and seniors, transfer students and a new event will event will welcome all Lee alumni to the campus.

On Friday night all Lee Day guests are invited to take part in the “Lee U Spotlight,” which will feature exemplary alumni and students making their mark on the world. The showcase will be followed by a Block Party with music, fun and games for all.

Parents of prospective students are welcome and encouraged to attend and participate in all Lee Day events. An event of interest will be a Saturday morning “Parent’s Inside Track” where the special guest will be Lee President Dr. Paul Conn. Members of the Financial Aid Office staff will be on hand to answer questions concerning financial, scholarship and grant opportunities.

A highlight of the weekend is the traditional “Life at Lee,” a light-hearted, yet practical look at Lee student life produced primarily by Lee students. The event will feature music, skits, and videos.

The final event of the weekend is a worship rally in Conn Center where the spiritual side of campus life is showcased. Scheduled to appear are the Voices of Lee and a message by President Conn. Eight student scholarships will be presented at the close of the event.

Going on the same weekend as Lee Day this year is an attempt by the Lee University social service club Alpha Gamma Chi to break a Guinness Book of World Records feat by playing the longest continuous flag football game. Alpha Gamma Chi has twice broken the world record for number of consecutive hours playing team softball. The first successful attempt came in 1986, followed by another in 2005. The flag football record is scheduled to be broken on Saturday evening following the rally and all Lee Day participants are encouraged to attend.
