University Students Set Up Reverse Confessional

Christian students at the University of Florida (UF) set up a makeshift confessional last Wednesday with a goal of not listening to confessions, but offering them.

Inside a booth constructed of PVC pipe and wine-red cloth, Christians apologized to students on campus on behalf of Christianity for the sins of the universal church. The group’s organizer, Russell McMullen, a sophomore involved with Campus Crusade for Christ, said he wanted to show UF students a positive side of Christianity.

“We used this to try and let people take a fair look at Christ and not just prejudge and write it off as a hateful and intolerant religion,” he told the campus newspaper, The Independent Florida Alligator. The group, which planned to continue the confessions through Friday, said they apologized for the moral failings of Christians who, by not acting in love, do not live up to the example set by Christ. They also expressed regret for the negative image that Christian students had presented on the UF campus. Graham Wigle, a freshman involved in the reverse confessional, told the Alligator: “We’re imperfect. We stink. We want to point people to the real Jesus.”
