Va. Defense Force Chaplain Wins Another Battle
By Dr. Robert Crick, Director, Chaplains Commission
Church of God Chaplain, Peter Shoars, a Commissioned Officer in the Virginia Defense Force, conducts volunteer military chaplaincy ministries at Walter Reed Medical Center.
Chaplain Shoars shares this testimony: “The other day, I visited the room of a young Special Forces Sergeant. His family was present. When I offered him a Bible, he declined and stated his wife was the religious one. I gave him a book entitled Dear Soldier. He accepted the book, but being unable to read it due to recovering from an operation, I read the book to the family. His 5-year-old son sat on my lap, and his 6-year-old daughter sat by her dad on his bed. After reading this short book, I spoke to them about the Lord. His wife’s look of hope encouraged me to ask the Sergeant if he would accept Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. He was reluctant to do so. Before leaving, I prayed for him and his healing. I also prayed the sinner’s prayer. I hugged him and asked him again if he would like a Bible; this time he readily accepted it. The following week when I visited him, I spoke with his wife while he was asleep. She said they had practically worn out the DVD I had given them. As I was leaving his room, the Head Nurse met me outside the door. She said several members of her staff stood outside his door listening when I read the book, Dear Soldier. She began to cry. I heard the door of the Sergeant’s room open, and his wife came out and told the Nurse she could cry openly because her Special Forces husband was crying also! It is an honor to be used by the Lord for these who have given so much for their nation.”
