Baptisms in the Middle East

MIDDLE EAST—A report from a country not generally friendly toward Christ and His gospel tells of a recent baptismal service, where a young couple took a public stand for their new faith. Their nation does not permit proselytism, e.g., a person being persuaded to leave his or her traditional religion to become a Christian. Someone who is baptized in outdoor waters, in full view of others, takes considerable risk.

The missionaries in this case are a Latin American businessman and his family, who believe their commercial opportunity is a passport to missionary service. Having been in the Middle Eastern nation for a few years, they have already begun two Christian churches. They have not been molested by the government or their neighbors, especially after a natural disaster struck a couple of years ago and they exhibited acts of kindness and helped many who were affected.

Missionaries in hostile environments such as this place have learned to be astute and wise in the way they share the good news of the gospel. St. Francis of Assisi is credited with having said, “Preach the gospel always; if necessary, use words.” It’s hard to think of “preaching” without using words; that might not be possible. However, the kindness shown to a neighbor often opens the door for the right words to be spoken.

World Missions appreciates the sacrificial ministry of our Latin brother, and we pray “souls for his hire” as he and his family continue to minister in this antagonistic setting.
