Youth and Discipleship, World Missions Leaders Nominated

Four Church of God leadership positions were nominated by the General Council of the Church of God on Tuesday. The group of ordained bishops is gathered in Orlando, Florida for the 74th Church of God International General Assembly.

Gary Lewis, who for the past four years has served as Assistant Director of Youth and Discipleship, was nominated to move into the top leadership post. Lewis has devoted his ministerial career to youth work and reflected upon his burden in his acceptance remarks.

“Thank you to all the youth directors and youth workers who, week in and week out, serve our children in the church,” Lewis stated. “Let us all leave this general assembly and find a least one young person to mentor.”

Tim Hill, outgoing first assistant general overseer of the Church of God was nominated to fill the post of General Director of World Missions. The last four years Hill has worked closely with World Missions as liaison to the Division of World Evangelization. Previously he served as secretary general, with a total of eight years on the executive committee.

“I commit to you my best for the cause of Christ,” Hill stated.

A Special Order of the Day which would have eliminated the two assistant positions for the above offices was not passed in action taken earlier in the day. With the posts open, nominations were taken for assistant directors in both Youth and Discipleship and World Missions.

Before the morning session adjourned, a new assistant director of youth and discipleship was nominated in the person of David Blair, current state director in South Georgia. Upon accepting the nomination, Blair stated, “This is the smartest generation, but it is my hope that they will know the love of Jesus Christ!”

Nominated for the post of assistant director of World Missions was John D. Childers, current state overseer of Alabama. Childers has an extensive leadership record in the Church of God including state youth director, state overseer, and assistant director and director of youth and discipleship.

“I believe in giving everything to the Church of God,” Childers said upon accepting the nomination. I am committing to you…and will be your servant.”
