Lee University Dedicates New Hughes Hall

Lee University President Dr. Paul Conn joined friends and family members of Dr. Ray H. Hughes, Sr. at the dedication ceremony of a new dormitory last week.

The ribbon was cut on New Hughes Hall after campus chapel services on Thursday, September 8. The new dormitory, built in place of the former Hughes Hall, will continue the rich tradition of residential community life Hughes Hall has enjoyed dating back to 1966. The 124-bed men’s residence hall is named for Ray H. Hughes, Sr., former president of Lee College (University) from 1960-1966 and 1982-1984, and the only three-term general overseer in the history of the Church of God. Hughes passed away earlier this year. He was 87.

President Hughes’ accomplishments during his six and two year terms were highlighted by increased enrollment to over 1,000 students, establishment of long-standing student organizations and programs, and construction of the current Higginbotham Administration Building and the campus’ first science building. In his second term he supervised original construction of the Paul Dana Walker Arena.

Participating in the ribbon-cutting ceremony were President and Mrs. Conn, Hughes’ widow, Linda, his four children and tenants of the new residence hall. The three-story structure is located on Magnolia Ave. on the Lee campus. It is three levels of suite-style rooms, computer labs, lounges and laundry facilities.
