Operation Compassion Responds to Hurricane Irene Aftermath
In response to the state of emergency, Operation Compassion, an benevolent organization affiliated with the Church of God, retooled their response to include the delivery of drinking water to families hit by Hurricane Irene. Operation Compassion, their disaster relief network and the Sanctuary of Hope have been setting up and distributing bottled water, food and other supplies throughout the region. Mercy Chefs have set up in Portsmouth, Va. at Sanctuary of Hope and is prepared to feed hundreds of families. A semi-truck loaded with ready to eat meals, water and other products are in transit to Portsmouth for distribution to inner city families as well.
As Irene passed through the southern shoreline of North Carolina and Virginia, it became evident that the loss of power across hundreds of miles would be a challenge for millions of people. Smaller towns, like Warsaw, Va. and Jackson, N.C., were hit harder for lack of resources. Families at risk became more vulnerable; children, single parent families and the elderly living on fixed incomes and depending on social services would lose double. Without power they would lose their food and Irene hit in the last week of the month so they would have to wait for the next month before they could purchase new provisions.
Feed the Children has continued to be a tremendous asset in helping supply necessary products for the relief effort. FTC was staging products in strategic locations for Operation Compassion and their network of disaster relief charities to use during ongoing efforts. Food, water and cleaning supplies that were staged and sent to Operation Compassion are on their way to disaster distribution.
Operation Compassion will keep their constituents posted on these ongoing and fluid efforts to assist the millions of survivors affected by Hurricane Irene.
