East Monument Street on downtown Baltimore’s east side is not far from the city’s gleaming Inner Harbor district. But the neighborhood I visited on Saturday is no tourist attraction. It is known for drugs, panhandlers and boarded-up apartments.

Lee University students have been volunteering in a feeding ministry reaching out into the Cleveland community. Created three years ago by Lee graduate Aaron Scaggs, the “Crossover” program provides groceries and fellowship to East Cleveland residents in need.
“An Evangelical Manifesto” was unveiled earlier today during a press conference at the National Press Club, calling for reaffirmation of identity, reformation of behavior and repositioning in public life among Evangelicals.

The Church of God Chaplains Commission will be offering its Community Service Chaplaincy Basic Training Seminar on June 2-6, 2008. The seminar will be held at the Church of God Theological Seminary. This is the chaplaincy training course that has been offered over the past 15 years and attended by more than 6,000 pastors, ministers, and church workers. It is designed for practical ministry outside the church in the local community – in hospitals, jails and prisons, law enforcement agencies, nursing homes, hospice associations, rescue missions, and countless other settings.
If you are interested in serving your community as a chaplain, this is the training seminar that will equip you for an effective ministry outside the church. It is designed specifically for practical, hands-on, care-giving ministry – and it is for anyone interested – both pastors and lay workers from any denomination or faith group. This is a full five days of training – it is like going to school – the goal is to train and equip. Some of the topics include: the history and theology of chaplaincy, ethics, prayer in the public forum, grief counseling, suicide, Critical Incident Stress, confidentiality, death notifications, clergy/client privilege, sensitivity and diversity, legal issues, profile of emergency services workers, women in chaplaincy, correctional chaplaincy, law enforcement chaplaincy, institutional chaplaincy and many other relevant subjects.
There is a biblical mandate to go out “beyond the gates” of the church to reach a lost and hurting world for Christ. This seminar can prepare you for the challenge of ministry outside the church and out where the people are.
