When I married my wife, Deborah, 30 years ago I had a tiny salary and no money in the bank, so our honeymoon was a budget affair: four nights in Miami Beach, four nights in Orlando, and then back to work. Deborah didn’t complain at all, but I always wanted to make it up to her. So this week we are enjoying an anniversary trip to Hawaii—and thinking a lot about God’s faithfulness.
Over time, I have discovered that God takes our fears very seriously. We often do not. Most of us have been afraid of the same things for so many years that we almost don’t notice how they’re affecting us anymore—or worse, we choose to ignore them.
We should honor our moms every day. But since we “officially” get one day out of the year to recognize the woman who changed our diapers, wiped our noses, kissed our skinned knees, sat in the front row of our games, watched us go on our first date, celebrated our wedding day and maybe even watched us have a child of our own, let’s put a little extra effort into it.
Communicate in a way that brings value to the relationship. As a parent, my words have the greatest impact on my child.
When you were younger, what did you dream of? Maybe it’s been so long you don’t remember. No matter what our age, we need to have a dream for our life. We need to have something to look forward to and work toward. And if we will trust God and do our part, we can see our dreams come to pass—even if they’ve been shattered and we need to begin again. That doesn’t mean things will always go the way we think they will, and it won’t always be easy. But when we’re determined to be faithful and diligent to do what God is calling us to do, He’ll always give us the grace and strength to keep going.
