Tragic Situation In Myanmar

World Missions has had numerous inquiries concerning the tragic situation in Myanmar where over 22,000 have died and hundreds of thousands have lost their homes. The Church of God has churches, missions, members and an orphanage there.

We have been unable to secure direct word from the overseer so we do not know a complete assessment of our church situation. We do know that members have lost homes and churches have been damaged. Asia Field Director, W.H. McLeod and Disaster Relief Coordinator, Richard Baker are scheduled to go to Myanmar, if they are allowed to enter the country. They will take relief for our people and personally assess the situation.

So far, the government has not allowed outside agencies to send in supplies. After we receive their report, we will respond as we can. Please join us in praying for the nation of Myanmar and our church family there.

If you wish to contribute funds, a project number has been arranged: 765-0039 Myanmar Disaster Relief.

Thanks for caring.

Myanmar Disaster Relief Project 7650039

UPDATE:

The latest estimated death total in Myanmar has reached up to 100,000 people. In addition to the staggering number of deaths, confusion about allowing aid workers and supplies into the country is delaying needed medicine, food and drinking water.

World Missions Field Director for Asia/Pacific, W. Harold McLeod, has been able to speak with leadership for Myanmar and has learned that as of this time the Church of God has not heard of any loss of life of pastors or members. However, there has been considerable damage to some churches and member’s homes. The Orphanage has had some damage and the need for food, water, and others supplies is great.

McLeod and the World Missions Disaster Relief Coordinator, Richard Baker were scheduled for departure for Myanmar on Sunday, May 11, 2008. Please pray that they can get into the country with assistance for our people.
