Gift Cards for Missionaries at the General Assembly

Monday, 07 July 2008

For many years, clothing has been taken to the General Assembly to be given to the wives of missionaries. Missionary Lorraine Alton and Sarah Moree, wife of former administrative assistant Chris Moree, first began taking clothes and giving them out of their hotel rooms. These ladies and others, such as Alma Kelley and Waneda Brownlow, would meet prior to the General Assembly and wash, iron and repair donated clothing.

Betty Rice, wife of former World Missions director Gene Rice, asked Alma Kelley to head this ministry, and in conjunction with the overseers’ wives around the nation, Alma began asking for new clothing. The success was overwhelming. Brother Lovell Cary, former World Missions director, officially named the venture Alma’s Closet after the efforts of Alma Kelley.

Clothes are still donated and kept on hand for missionaries traveling to the U.S. However, this year due to the growth of the demand and the high cost of shipping expenses, gift cards will be given to missionaries so they can shop at their preferred retailer. Over the years, the means of meeting the need has changed, but the desire to provide for our most dedicated missionaries is still foremost on the minds of the World Missions leadership.
