Billboards Compose ‘Prayer Path’ in N.C.

A North Carolina man has set out to help area families face their financially and spiritually tough times, and he is using billboards to spread the encouragement.

Scott Saunders is founder of the Matthew 5:14 organization, a group that runs a billboard campaign. He explains the effort began ten years ago when he prayed the prayer of Jebez and asked God to increase his territory.

“I had to go up in the mountains on a business trip. I was coming back [at] about dusk, and I was listening to praise music, singing along and reading my Bible cards, and at that time, right where I was on the interstate, God just kind of pressed me to put his Word out in public,” Saunders shares.

After returning from his business trip, he wrote down what he thought God was calling him to do and developed a plan.

“We put together something called a ‘prayer path,'” the organization founder explains. “I thought, ‘Well this is great; every church should want to put God’s Word out in public’ — and I couldn’t [have been] more wrong at the time, but that’s okay.”

Facing rejection, Saunders resorted to selling cars to make ends meet, but he stayed true to his calling and sought various ways to increase his influence for God. After eight years, God blessed his faithfulness and brought new partners who embraced his vision.

“I told them what I was doing and didn’t think anything of it until this February,” he recalls. “The friend of the lady [who] was looking, she’s a retired Baptist lady, called me up and said, ‘Scott…I am rolling over an IRA [Individual Retirement Account] and I want to donate money to make this happen.'”

The new partner provided the necessary funds to purchase 30 billboards throughout the greater Charlotte, North Carolina, community. Saunders rejoices that through the efforts, prayers, and financial donations of partners like this contributor, the organization has been able to display God’s Word in public.
