Organizers of a movement seeking to reach the unchurched and those who used to attend church are gearing up for a major outreach.
National Back to Church Sunday [1], an initiative of Outreach, Inc., held its first event last year and saw hundreds of congregations take part. Officials report that more than 700,000 people were invited by family and friends to attend worship services.
Eric Abel of Outreach, Inc. tells OneNewsNow why his organization initiated this effort.
“Most people in America have been to church, yet only 20 percent are regular attenders,” he explains. “Statistics show that every week, we lost about 150,000 people in churches. People leave for a variety of reasons — many don’t believe in organized religion or they’re just too busy with life. But one of the main reasons [they offer] is that Christians are judgmental and hypocritical sometimes of people who don’t fit in.”
More than a million invitations are anticipated for this year’s Back to Church Sunday, which is set for September 12.
